Adoption Law
Adoption Law is a legal process which creates a legal parent-child relationship between individuals who are not the biological parent of the adoptive child. The biological parent(s) give up all parental rights and obligations, and these rights and obligations are assumed by the adoptive parents.
Ways you can adopt a child:
- Agency Adoption - an adoption through a public or private agency.
- Identified Adoption - an adoption in which the adoptive parents and birth parents communicate with each other directly or through an intermediary.
- Independent Adoption - an adoption in which the birth mother personally selects the adoptive parents through personal knowledge of them.
- International Adoption - an adoption in which the adoptive child is a citizen of another country.
- Stepparent Adoption - an adoption in which a parent's new spouse adopts the child that the parent had with a previous spouse.
